My name is Shriya Magatapalli I am 14 years old, I am an eight grader in Prairieview located in Waukee, Iowa. I enjoy science because there is no right or wrong way to do it. You can always look at the experiment in multiple angles to learn more about it. I wanted to get involved in research because there is a possibility that I can make a difference in the world, no matter how small or big it is. Our scientific research question was: How can we decrease the number of deaths of birds caused by wind turbines? We chose this question because wind turbines are a big contributor to the energy produced in Iowa. We wanted to still use green energy to power our houses, but we wanted to make it safer for the wildlife. Our process for solving this problem was to do some research on the turbines and the wildlife of Iowa. We researched the death rates of birds, and how many of those deaths were caused by wind turbines. We also looked at other alternative solutions that are currently there. Other alternative solutions found on the market are color blades, and wind turbines in different shapes. When we looked more into the alternative solutions, we found that they were all still in the testing process and there is nothing on the market to help save the birds. We faced many difficulties through the research process, we didn't know where to begin for a while. Sometimes we were not able to find the information that we wanted and had to look in different places. We talked to multiple professionals, and they told us what we wanted to know and weren't able to find for ourselves. They told us how a wind turbine works and what we can do. We spoke to electricians, wildlife experts, and professors; who told us all that we needed to know to draw to a conclusion.
